WHAT IS
GOSPEL SOUL CARE?
"Biblical counseling is a focused form of discipleship that emphasizes applying God's Word and walking in His Spirit in all aspects of life, including its challenges and sufferings. It involves living by and delighting in the law of the Lord in every situation, while also encouraging others to do the same."
Biblical Counseling Defined:
Biblical counseling is the personal ministry of God’s Word. It is face-to-face gospel ministry. It is a fluid event and process where the follower of Jesus Christ offers loving direction and comfort to someone according to the truth and power of God’s Word under the ministry of His Holy Spirit.
Psalm 1:1-3 “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.”
Biblical Counseling is a process:
-
rooted in God, utterly determined and driven by God’s Word.
-
acknowledges God as the Creator of All Things (Genesis 1:1)
-
upholds the Sovereignty and Authority of God (Ephesians 1: 9-11)
-
Confident in God’s eternal work in His people (Philippians 1:6)
-
Relies upon God’s Word for knowledge, wisdom, and direction (Ps. 73.:24; Proverbs 3:5-6)
-
Embraces characteristics of God’s counsel: True, Loving, Compassionate, Patient, Merciful, Just, Wise, and so on
-
Is devoted to God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
-
Exalts Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:28)
-
Empowered by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:1-3;5:16) We live in the service of God’s Spirit, not the other way around. We don’t use Him to serve our purposes. He uses us to serve His purposes. We are His ministers of grace.
-
Praying constantly. (I Thess. 5:16-18)
-
Loving, motivated by affection for God and genuine compassion for others. Seeking the eternal good of the person. (Ephesians 4:15) and shaped by biblical love (1 John 4:7; Colossians 1:28-29)
-
Contains speech and conversation which is sensitive, tender, wise, and morally appropriate in content and implication (Colossians 4:6)
-
Encourages people to love the Lord God with all their heart and love others as themselves (Deuteronomy 6:5; Ephesians 5:1-2)
As a biblical counselor I seek to be: gospel-centered, theologically-saturated, relationship-focused, church history-informed, and a research-aware soul physician of embodied-souls.
